Events

5th Annual Conference for Sustainable Development

The 5th CSD Annual Conference on Sustainable Development 2022 was organized by CSD on 13-15 October. 2022. 

Conference Convenor, Prof. Dr. Samiya Selim started by welcoming all the guests and attendees, while Professor Imran Rahman, Vice Chancellor, ULAB introduced ULAB and how sustainability is a core principle in its foundation. Mr. Kazi Nabil Ahmed, Member, Board of Trustees, ULAB addressed how climate change is a reality for Bangladesh and how ULAB focuses on building future leaders who will help Bangladesh become even more resilient. Ms. Farah Kabir, Country Director, of ActionAid Bangladesh gave an insightful speech about collective actions and political efforts to develop a comprehensive, holistic, and rights-based approach to address the impacts of climate change. Dr. Ingrid Van Putten spoke about how the fisheries sector is being affected by climate change and the unsustainable use of marine resources. The session was ended by Mr. Zaved Akhtar, CEO and MD, of Unilever Bangladesh Limited provided insight into how more than half the people now prefer brands that are sustainable and bring positive societal changes. The ceremony was concluded by Professor Imran Rahman by gifting plants to the Special Guest and Guests of Honor.

 

Park Play Day (Nature-based fun activity for Kids)

The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) ULAB, in collaboration with Mekateam and Shahabuddin Park Management Committee, organized the event "Park Play Day”. The children definitely had fun exploring Justice Shahabuddin Park and enjoyed nature-based games. . Students actively participated in utilizing waste paper. We also believe crafting is good for our mental health as making something with our hands can take our minds off of our worries. 

 

 

 

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗕

As part of their coursework GED 217,𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗕 visited the CCDB Climate Center in Sreepur Gazipur on the 25th of August.

Students learned about the impacts of climate change on the five different ecological zones of Bangladesh and sustainable technologies such as desalination of drinking water, solar drip irrigation, agroforestry, hydroponic vegetable cultivation, floating rice cultivation, and many other technologies to adapt to Climate Change. Students also observed and learned about the technology used by the climate center to minimize fossil fuel use and various prototypes on climate change mitigation technology.

 

CSD-ULAB Signed MOU with The Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH)

The Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH), one of the research institutes in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Heidelberg and University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 2 July 2019 at the ULAB campus in Dhanmondi. The aim of the signing was to apply for grants through collaboration, exchange of students, faculty members, and technical staff to facilitate knowledge transfer involving identified areas of academic collaboration and other activities as deemed mutually appropriate.

ULAB was represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor H M Jahirul Haque, PhD, while Heidelberg Institute of Global Health was represented by Professor, Dr.Dr. Till Barnighausen, Director of HIGH. University officials participating from ULAB included Professor Imran Rahman, Special Advisor to the Board of Trustees; Director of CSD Dr.SamiyaSelim accompanied by other CSD faculty members.

 

 

CSD organized an information sharing session on “The Rohingya Artolution: A historical precedent for the future of Art Education in Emergencies”

Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) has organized an information sharing session on “The Rohingya Artolution: A historical precedent for the future of Art Education in Emergencies”, on Wednesday, 19 June 2019 at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh. Mr Suza Uddin, Country Manager, Artolution who is also a journalist and humanitarian specialist, shared his multifaceted experiences working on the plight of the Rohingya. The program was moderated by Assistant professor-cum-research Associate Dr. Rumana Sultana. Dr. Haseeb Md. Irfanullah, Visiting Research Fellow, CSD, ended the session enlightening the audience with his precious experience and thoughts on Rohingya Crisis in Bangladesh.

 

 

Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) arranged Gobeshona Seminar on “Landscape Management in a Changing Environment”

Dr. Debbie Bartlett a Chartered Landscape Architect (Management Division) and the Fellow of Chartered institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. She is well known internationally for her work on the socio-economics of forestry and developing participatory strategies for ecosystem service evaluation. She is particularly interested in the threats and opportunities of our rapidly changing environment. In this seminar, on April 10th, 2019,  she discussed about “Landscape Management in a Changing Environment”. Honorable Director of ICCAD, Dr. Saleemul Huq chaired the seminar and shared his experience on the topic.

 

 

CSD organized “2019 ULAB-Keele Renewable Energy SYMPOSIUM”

Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) and Keele University ,UK successfully organized a symposium at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on April 4th, 2019. This symposium was mainly focused on “Building Resilient Energy Generation for Small & Remote Communities in Small Island Developments. Honorable Chairman of Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) Md. Helal Uddin was the Chief Guest. Distinguished academicians, researchers and development practitioners of Renewable Energy field also attended the program.

 

Seminar organized by CSD on “Air Pollution – Breathing Health(ier) Amid Rapid Urbanization”

Anna Williams a prominent public health Specialist and the Lead Author of CSD’s latest Report on “Air Pollution – Breathing Health(ier) Amid Rapid Urbanization” presented her work on a Seminar arranged by CSD-ULAB on February 13, 2019. Special Advisor to the Board of Trustees Prof. Imran Rahman was present there with his scholarly welcome speech. Additionally, the seminar incorporated our guests Mr. Iverson Long, (Environment, Science, Technology and Health Office), Embassy of United States of America along with ULAB faculties and students from different departments.

 

 

Seminar on Ecosystem Based Adaptation and Non-Economic Loss and Damage due to Climate Change

Gobeshona Seminar at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) held on Ecosystem Based Adaptation and Non-Economic Loss and Damage due to Climate Change on April 26, 2018. The seminar was chaired by Dr. Salimul Huq, Director, ICCCAD. Professor Dr. Imran Rahman, Spacial Advisor to the BoT, ULAB was the Special Guest. Dr. Samiya Selim, Rabiul Islam, Md. Tajul Islam, Joy Bhowmik, Md. Shamsuddoha presented their respective papers on the issue.

 

 

CSD and ICCCAD jointly organizes seminar on “Climate Policy and Finance: National and Global Perspective”

Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) and International center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) jointly organized a seminar on 27th March, 2018 at the seminar room Campus B, ULAB. The seminar was based on “Climate Policy and Finance: National and Global Perspective”. The seminar started by an opening speech from Prof. Imran Rahman, special advisor to the board of trustees and moderated by the director of CSD Dr. Samiya A Selim. Two speakers from the ICCCAD Mr. Sakib Huq and Yusuf Mahid discussed about the national and international institutional arrangement of climate policy and the scope of climate finance to tackle the impacts of climate change. The seminar was supported by USAID.

 

CSD organizes lecture on Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change Action

Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) has organized a lecture on nature-based solutions for climate change action in Bangladesh under its ‘Environment and Sustainability Lecture Series’ Program on 11 March 2018 at ULAB Auditorium, Campus A, ULAB. The title of the lecture was “Can Nature-based Solutions help us to face Climate Change”. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Haseeb Md. Irfanullah, Programme Coordinator, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and program was moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Samiya Selim, Director, CSD.

Dr. Irfanullah talked about current global and regional climate change issues, discussed the current policies regarding the climate action and finally proclaimed the potential of nature-based initiatives and solutions for tackling changing climate in a sustainable way. The lecture session ended with an interactive question & answer session with 100 students who had attended the lecture.

_MG_1730CSD and Sustainable Development Club jointly holds a seminar on “Community Interactive Tourism for Sustainable Development of Rural Areas”

ULAB Sustainable Development Club hosted a seminar on 31st October at the seminar room, Campus B. Mr. Magfi Reza Siddique, founder of DAAHUK spoke about his project on turning Tanguar haor to an attractive tourist location by developing a proper plan. DAAHUK is a Community Interactive Tourism Network. Mr. Ehsan, a speaker from BUET accompanied him by sharing the background work of the architectural design of the tourist boat. They also shared the experiences and challenges of a sustainable tourism based social business model.

ULAB Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) and Sustainable Development Club jointly organized a seminar on 24th October 2017 at the seminar room, Campus B, ULAB. The seminar was based on “The Cruelty in Our Food”. The main speaker of the seminar was Rubaiya Ahmed, Founder, Obhoyaronno Bangladesh Animal Welfare. She mainly focused on our food habit and motivated everyone to avoid red meat and processed animal products which included egg, milk etc. Furthermore, she also mentioned about “Meatless Monday” which is being followed globally and that we all should adapt soon.

CSD has introduced its first Curriculum Integration program at ULAB on 20 August 2017. Vice Chancellor Prof. HM Jahirul Haque and Prof. Imran Rahman, Special Advisor to the Board were present at the inauguration program. On this program, CSD launched out its recent research report on “Greening ULAB: Pioneering the Campus Sustainability Program in Bangladesh”

Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) arranges a workshop on “Knowing River and River Conservation” on 16th July,2017. The main speaker of the workshop was Sheikh Rokon, Secretary General of Riverine People. In this workshop, the students got to know about the rivers and their impacts on the lives of people. The speaker also made the students aware of the pollution of the rivers and asked them to work for saving the rivers from pollution as the future lies within the hands of new generation.

World Environment Day was observed at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on 5 June, 2017. Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) of ULAB organized a program marking the day and Prof Dr. HM Jahirul Haque, Vice-Chancellor of ULAB, Prof Imran Rahman, Special Advisor to the Board, and Dr. Samiya Selim, Director of CSD, inaugurated the program. Students made their contributions by arranging drama on saving environment, doing exhibitions of posters illustrating how to save the planet from pollution and taking pledges on ways to minimize carbon footprint.

 

 

CSD hosts Seminar on Climate Resilient Agriculture Practices in BangladeshIMG_3813

As a member of the Gobeshona network, Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh has organized a seminar on sharing knowledge, experience and good practice about climate resilient agriculture practices on 10 April,2017. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Imran Rahman, Special Advisor to the Board and chaired by Dr. Saleemul Huq, director of ICCCAD. Further, Mr. Mostafa Rahman from CNRS showed how climate resilient farming practices in Shyamnagar are protecting ecosystem as well as ensuing livelihood. The seminar was attended by 120 participants including several NGO officials, representative from INGOs and other development agencies, students from different departments and faculties. It ended with the vote of thanks from Dr. Samiya Selim, the director of CSD, ULAB

_MG_1124CSD Hosts 2nd Annual Conference on Sustainable Development

The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) had successfully organized the 2nd Annual Conference on Sustainable Development on the 10th and 11th of February,2017. The aim of this conference was to identify and share empirical research findings and practical, evidence-based solutions and public-private collaboration that can support the UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, the conference particularly focused on 8 Sustainable Development Goals – Clean Energy, Sustainable Cities, Water and Sanitation, Climate Action, Zero Hunger, sustainable consumption and production and life below water and on land. Findings from the conference discussions are being published in December 2017.
