Fisher's Plight During Pandemic And Fishing Ban Period
COVID-19 pandemic and the 65-day fishing ban affected the lower-income fishing communities in coastal Bangladesh. While Bangladesh is reportedly reaping the benefit of the fishing ban in terms of higher fish production, this restriction is also causing income loss and posing threats to the resilience of the small-scale fishing (SSF) communities of coastal Bangladesh. Our study suggests long-term investments in creating alternative income-generating activities and skills development to build their resilience against this phenomenon.
The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), a research center at the University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh has been working with both national and international partners to achieve SDG 14 focused goals. During the 2020 pandemic, CSD partnered with the NGO ‘Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF)’ to study the impact of the pandemic and finishing ban on their multi-level resilience of SSF in the coastal belt of Bangladesh. CSD-ULAB is also a partner in the Vulnerable to Viability (V2V) project, an initiative of University of Waterloo, Canada. V2V focuses on the transdisciplinary approach to both understanding SSF and implementing effective positive change to this vulnerable group. Dr. Samiya Selim is the Bangladesh Country Coordinator for V2V program. CSD-ULAB is also a partner of NOCRISES project and working with The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), Bremen on this project. NOCRISES focuses on marine conflicts in ocean hot spots and the Bangladesh case study is focused on addressing equity in blue growth and development.
